Pre Election:
Thinking of Running For Council...Now What?
This engaging and informative workshop is designed to help prospective election candidates make informed decisions before deciding to run for municipal office. The session explores key topics such as understanding some of the reasons to run—or not run—for council, what to consider before entering the race, and the roles and responsibilities of council members and municipal staff. Participants will also gain a clearer understanding of the powers and influence of municipal government, the importance of transparency and accountability, and strategies for engaging with the media and the public. Whether they're committed to running or still deciding, this session will give prospective candidates the knowledge and confidence to take the next step.
Post Election:
Congratulations, You're Elected!...Now What?
Stepping into elected office is an honour—and a significant responsibility. This comprehensive and interactive training workshop is designed to prepare newly elected (and returning) Council members with the foundational knowledge, skills, and insights needed to govern effectively and ethically. Participants will explore core governance principles, understand the distinct roles of Council and staff, and learn about key legislative responsibilities, including conflict of interest, codes of conduct, and closed meeting rules. Topics also include municipal finance, public engagement, transparency, and effective meeting management. This session equips elected officials to build public trust, make informed decisions, and lead with integrity and confidence from day one.
