Election Candidate Workshops Complete!
Now It's Time to Prepare for Council Orientation

As the 2026 municipal election approaches, we are proud to share that we have now completed Election Candidate Workshops for more than 70 municipalities across the province.
Over the past few months, we have had the privilege of speaking with hundreds of prospective municipal candidates who are considering public service in their communities. These sessions have provided participants with practical information about the realities of serving on municipal council, including governance responsibilities, ethics and accountability, finance considerations, legislative requirements, public engagement, and the significant commitment involved in elected office.
The enthusiasm, thoughtful questions, and dedication we have seen from prospective candidates have been encouraging reminders of the important role local government plays in shaping vibrant and resilient communities.
While candidate education is an important first step, the real work begins after Election Day.
As municipalities prepare to welcome newly elected and returning members of council this fall, Clerks on Call is now shifting its focus to comprehensive Council Orientation and Council Readiness programs designed specifically for Ontario municipalities.
A well-planned orientation program does far more than simply provide information. It helps establish expectations, build relationships, clarify roles and responsibilities, and create a strong foundation for effective governance throughout the four-year term. Early investments in orientation can help councils avoid common challenges, strengthen Council-staff relationships, improve decision-making, and increase confidence among both new and experienced members.
Our Council Orientation programs are customized to meet the unique needs of each municipality and can include topics such as:
- Municipal governance and the role of Council
- Council-staff relations and governance best practices
- Legislative responsibilities and ethical decision-making
- Municipal finance and fiduciary obligations
- Conflict of interest and codes of conduct
- Closed meeting rules and confidentiality
- Parliamentary procedure and effective meeting participation
- Public engagement, customer service, and managing citizen expectations
- Strategic planning and goal setting
- Team building and Council relationship development
- Mock council meetings and practical exercises
Whether your municipality is looking for a half-day orientation session, a full-day workshop, a multi-day onboarding program, or ongoing governance training throughout the term, Clerks on Call can help build a customized approach that supports both Council and staff.
The months immediately following an election represent a unique opportunity to establish a positive and productive working relationship between Council and administration. A thoughtful orientation program can set the tone for the entire term of council.
We would like to thank all of the municipalities that invited us to participate in their candidate education efforts this year. We look forward to continuing to support Ontario municipalities as they prepare for the next chapter following the 2026 municipal election.
If your municipality is beginning to plan for Council orientation or post-election governance training, we would be pleased to discuss how Clerks on Call can help.
